Japan and the Mystery genre

amh1988 I have noticed that, of the Japanese media I watch, the detective and mystery genre seems to do significantly better in rating than other styles or themes. There also seems to be a LOT of them produced. I began to wonder if there was a cultural aspect that I was missing to account for this, but then it got quite dark. (My theory, that is.)
The thing is, Japan has a staggeringly high conviction rate. It is inevitable that many innocent people have been hurt by this model of conviction above all else. But, the mystery/detective dramas I've seen often find their perpetrator on exceedingly flimsy circumstantial evidence and conjecture. The the show, the person often confesses once confronted, and it's rarely the bait and switch situation seen more often in western media.
And I wonder if these portrayals make it easier for the public to accept that the prosecutions well thought out story as truth, just because it makes sense. I imagine being falsely accused in Japan is tantamount to being convicted if the police don't believe you. But then again, this is only conjecture on my part, which is pretty hypocritical sooo....
Maybe I'll look into it more at a later date and form a more complete opinion.
