I like Aiba/Ohno friendship fics too. (Well, actually, I like pretty much everything; I'm not picky!) XD The only reason I haven't written one is because.... well, I only started writing Arashi fanfiction at the beginning of June. ^^'
OMG, FATE!!?? I was just lurking on that journal yesterday (for the awesom picspam) but I didn't come across the fanfiction. Maybe I should take another look? Ah~ But sad endings hurt me... ;.;
The thing is, usually, Sho would notice that Aiba was acting right away. However, because he's kind of mixed up in his own feelings, he doesn't really see it. It's kind of common, isn't? when someone breaks up with you, You really don't want them to see how much they hurt you. When you break up with someone else, you don't want to think there don't care. Because that implies that they didn't care about you much, or they knew the relationship was going wrong but were just waiting for you to be the one to call things off.
Kind of wordy in my explanation, sorry. (My semi-recent experience is showing here...) But basically, "The heart rules where the mind fears to tread." Meaning Sakurai isn't really thinking about it; it's just the way he feels.
